Calcium Carbonate Filler Masterbatch: Cutting PP Cost Without Cutting Quality

A well-formulated CaCO3 masterbatch is one of the simplest ways to bring down raw material cost per kg - if the particle size and coating are right.

What Is Calcium Carbonate Filler Masterbatch?

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) filler masterbatch is a carrier-resin concentrate loaded with finely ground, surface-coated calcium carbonate. It is let down into virgin or recycled PP at the extruder or moulding machine to replace a portion of the base resin, reducing material cost while adding stiffness and dimensional stability to the finished part.

Why Manufacturers Use It

PP resin is priced by the kilogram, and calcium carbonate is significantly cheaper. Replacing 10-40% of the resin with a good filler masterbatch reduces shrinkage, improves stiffness, and can even shorten cycle time in some moulding applications - all while keeping the part visually and mechanically acceptable for its end use.

What Affects Performance

Not every CaCO3 masterbatch behaves the same way. Three variables matter most:

Where It Is Used

CaCO3-filled PP is common in injection-moulded houseware, crates, pails, automotive interior trim, pipe fittings and woven sack applications where cost efficiency matters more than optical clarity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Calcium Carbonate Filler Masterbatch, answered by the Siya Polymer technical team.

At moderate loadings (10-30%) with a properly coated, fine-particle grade, tensile strength changes are minimal while stiffness generally improves; impact strength can reduce slightly, which our team accounts for in grade selection.

Most injection moulding applications use 10-30% loading, though woven sack and some extrusion applications can go higher depending on the required properties.

Yes, it works well with recycled PP and can help offset some of the property variation seen in reprocessed material.

A well-coated, fine-particle grade has minimal impact on surface finish; coarser or poorly dispersed grades can cause a duller or slightly speckled appearance.
