Slip & Anti-Block Additives for Plastic Films: Why Bags Stick (or Don't)

Two additives, two opposite jobs - slip reduces friction so film glides through machinery, anti-block stops layers from fusing together on the roll.

Slip and Anti-Block Additives for Plastic Film - Siya Polymer

The Problem: Blocking

Freshly extruded PE or PP film layers are smooth and can fuse together under the pressure and heat of winding - a phenomenon called blocking. Blocked film is difficult to separate, jams bagging machines and causes production downtime.

Anti-Block Additives

Anti-block additives, typically fine mineral particles like silica or talc, create microscopic surface roughness that keeps film layers from making full contact, allowing them to separate cleanly without affecting clarity significantly when dosed correctly.

Slip Additives

Slip additives, usually fatty amide compounds, migrate to the film surface and act as a lubricant, reducing the coefficient of friction. This allows film to feed smoothly through packaging machinery, form seals correctly, and resist scuffing during handling.

Why They're Used Together

Most commercial film formulations combine slip and anti-block additives, since low friction alone doesn't prevent blocking, and blocking resistance alone doesn't guarantee smooth machine handling. The right balance depends on film thickness, resin type and the specific packaging line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Slip & Anti-Block Additives, answered by the Siya Polymer technical team.

Blocking occurs when smooth film surfaces fuse under wind-up pressure and heat; anti-block additives create surface texture that prevents this.

Yes, migratory slip additives can interfere with ink adhesion or lamination bonding if dosed too high, so print or laminate-grade films often use a carefully balanced, lower slip level.

Dosage varies by resin and film thickness, generally in the range of a few thousand parts per million - our team can recommend an exact loading for your application.

Yes, combination masterbatches with both slip and anti-block agents are common and simplify dosing for film producers.
